8 "Weird things" in korea

If you come to Korea for a small trip or a relatively small amount of time, you really have to be aware that there are some things that might be considered"slightly" weird for western people. While if you decide to live in Korea for a longer period of time you will sure encounter bigger differences and get used to this, we thought it could be fun to introduce to you some of things that are common only in Korea!

Western Music is non-existent
Well, not really non existent...it depends from the place where you go. But as a foreigner living in Korea, I noticed that I'm exposed to korean music more than western music, to the point that I don't even know what's the new music in my Country.

Everyfood has a "chain" or a "brand"
The first time I ordered chicken with a korean friend I was asked "so what BRAND do you like?". For me brands are Versace, Luois Vuitton or whatever... but in Korea I soon found out that there are brands or Chains of restaurants almost for every style. There are several coffee shop chains, several sangyeopsal o Takgalbi restaurant chains....there is even a famous Only Mandu Chain here in the Mapo Area (Mapo Mandu, by the way...I really love it.). Some chains are so famous they even have sponsored testimonial! For example, Kyochon, a famous chicken wings brand, has Lee Minho as testimonial.

Convenience store everywhere opened 24/7
I'm sure that every Country has their 24/7 open shops or store, but the thing is, in Korea they just are EVERYWHERE and at a walking distance from one another. They not only sell food and snacks, but also random stuff as utensilies, stationery, beauty product, complete meals, elechtronic devices and they often have a snack/dining area to cook your meal! One thing that I love is that you can buy premade cups with ide and a a small tetrapack bag with something to drink, then put it together and...voilĂ , you have your drink! Just in case it's past midnight and coffee shops are not open....

Toilet Paper
You know Kitchen Towel? Kleenex? disponsable tissue? Well, koreans know them too, but everywhere you go you will probably find toilet paper instead of everything else. Why? If you think about it, Toilet paper is...still paper.

Water and Side Dishes are free
Wherever you go, whatever you order...you will receive kimchi, a soup ans some other small plates with vegetables or fermented stuff. Those are called Banchan and they're all free. Always. Together with Water, that it's mostly self-service.

Toilets
Public Toilets in Korea are clean and free, most of the times. Specifically, Subway station's toilets are definitely cleaner than any western toilet I've ever tried. Plus, they have a help button, bag hanger and, sometimes, a sound for when you do your more "rumorous" stuff to cover the bad sound. The only downside is that not everyone has toilet paper in it.

Forks and Knives
Forks and Knives are a problem. I live here and finding a good sharp knive for my house was a huge problem. In restaurants is extremely rare to find a knive, while you can still easily ask for a fork to the stuff.

Pedal
What is Pedal? It's basically Delivery. You call the place or use a app and order food. What's so special, you will ask? Well, in first place they can deliver anything at whicever time (even 3am) and whichever place (I once got delivered chicken in the middle of a park, yo!). In second place, if you order things to your house, they will be delivered with real plates and real culterly! Once you're done, you don't have to wash them or throw them away, just put them back in the bag and leave it outside. The Delivery Guy will come back to get them.
